A large proportion of Skateboarders are also amusingly known as ‘Skatehoarders’ due to the vast amount of skate memorabilia they tend to collect over the years. Anyone who has ever skateboarded usually remembers their first set up like it was yesterday. Unfortunately they usually end up literally ridden until the wheels fall off or until your parents throw it out in the trash along with old appliances and unwanted clothing. A few however survive for decades and are preserved by avid skateboard memorabilia collectors along with magazines, stickers, shoes and anything else associated with skate culture.
More and more Skateboarding memorabilia Instgram accounts are cropping up in the present day. From vintage or limited edition boards to rare shoes by defunct brands and other collectibles, all equally triggering a warm sense of nostalgia amongst the skate community.
The larger skateboarding channels are also getting in on the act. Skateboarder Magazine previously had a feature called 'Raiders of the Archives' and more recently Transworld Skateboarding has its 'SkateHoarders’ series. Now with the help of the various forms of social media, the skateboarding community has fortunately let skate hoarders come to light and share their collections with us. Skateboarding Youtube channels have shown there is a world full of skateboarding historians who usually unearth garages or storage units full of awesome skate memorabilia.
There is now also SkaterCon, held each year in Phoenix Arizona. This event is a celebration of skateboarding culture and a place where anyone can attend and buy, sell or simply view the various skateboarding collections on display. The event is also a great chance for skateboarders from all walks of life to catch up and reminisce or share their own personal stories and experiences in skateboarding. The event is attended by everyone from kids to skateboarding legends and members of the Skateboarding Hall of Fame such as Steve Alba.
